News from the Kitchen and Bath Show KBIS

The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show started Tuesday in Chicago. Owned by the NKBA - National Kitchen and Bath Association, this year's show is taking place at McCormick Place, the largest convention center in the US. With nearly 500 exhibitors including large industry names such as Kohler, SubZero, Wolf, Wilsonart, Moen, and many others. The opening, presented by the HGTV designer Candice Olson, was a great start ! Candice showed many of her before and after projects, from small budgets to more comfortable ones, showing that Design can be Everywhere, we just need imagination and knowledge about codes, materials, and techniques.

The show, that ends today, Thursday April 26, is exclusive for the trade. It offers seminars, classes and special events. The new showcase area called Uncontained, is a fun demonstration of how to design for different generations and family cases. Different ambiences are created inside open containers giving  the designers ideas and statistics for five common customer situations in today's market.

6 tips to Create or update your kitchen for 2012

If you are planning a new kitchen or simply want to spice up your existing one in 2012, take a look at these six tips to create your new stylish room.

1. The new kitchens are not full of ornaments but not sleek either! They are simple and clean. They are functional, productive and warm. They are for everyday use.

"6 Square Cabinets 2012 new colors"2. Cabinet makers are continuing betting on the espresso and white duet, but new colors can be found on the cabinetry market for 2012. Consumers want lighter and brighter rooms. Add colors to cabinets, walls, countertops and accessories to reflect the new trend. Medium browns and pastel colors, contrasting with hi-gloss in moderation and vibrant color accents; will give the tune. Look for greens, blues, camels with undertones of pinks, purples and yellows. Use black and slate with satin gold and silver details. Let stained and painted cabinets share the same room.

3. Today’s busy life requires a more casual living with all family participating in everyday activities and friends collaborating during entertainment events. Choose integrated appliances to give the kitchen a clean look and to facilitate the work, reducing the time spent in some daily functions.

4. Islands and peninsulas are not only great work places; they are the center of cooking and gathering in the kitchen. Installing pendent lights with rich and deep hues transform those areas to an exciting focal point. Even a small island, in a different color or style, will make the kitchen pop up!

5. Blend different materials, colors and textures; open up the space with open shelves and glass cabinets. Add new generation LED lights under and or inside the cabinets. Add see-thru draperies or no curtains on the windows to welcome the sun light.

6. Add good quality wood accessories and colorful small eco-friendly appliances. The contrast will bring a connection between past and future. It will warm the space at the same time that keeps it practical and fun; preserving the roots and the future of the family.

The 2012 kitchen is a reflection of today’s life style: simple; functional; conscious of the planet and heritage; and always a place to be happy and celebrate family and friends!

Spirit of Volunteerism

Holiday’s time is a time for giving. Friendship and love are in the air. It’s like everyone opens their heart to help and that’s simply wonderful! Designers involved in the NKBA® – National Kitchen and Bath Association; are, one more time, returning to the community in Broward County the support received throughout the year from it.

This coming Saturday, December 17, fifteen designers from the South Florida Chapter will donate their morning to help Habitat for Humanity® in the construction of one house at the Villages of Fort Lauderdale. The volunteers work in different areas of the home remodeling according to their knowledge and expertise.

Last year on August 21, Design is Everywhere™ was represented at similar event. Our two participants painted and helped with roofing for two different houses. What a great day! It was a fantastic experience not only for us but for the entire group of participants. To be involved with Habitat for Humanity® at any level, is a great way to give hope to the ones less fortunate in need of a home. And anyone can help!

Habitat® is present around the world helping to fight poverty housing and the homeless through programs that provide simple but affordable, decent shelter to those who live in poor conditions or are homeless. In the U.S., the organization lends no-profit, no interest loans to those who qualify for their program. There are several ways to help this non-profit organization. Donate a few hours of your time and working at construction sites is not the only one. From spreading the word to helping with monetary donations; to donating cabinets, furniture and other used items, to buying used household supplies from Habitat® Re-stores; are some of the many ways to help. Visit www.habitat.org for more information and make a difference in someones life!

Three Re-stores are in our area. West Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale house locations that receive and re-sell construction material and furniture, some new, some used but in good shape and conditions, to support the case. Contact the stores for donations or go there to buy something you need.

Let’s help to make the season a little sweeter for the homeless! Get involved!

Choosing Your Next Countertop

"Corian Countertop"

Corian Countertop

The options available in the market for countertops are numerous. The constant demand for new materials increases the diversity of colors, textures and prices. A short summary of the most requested materials will help you to decide the material for your next countertop remodeling or replacement. The materials listed below will give you a good idea of what types of countertops would be most suitable for your kitchen or bath remodeling job.

Marble and Granite:

Extracted from nature, marble and granite slabs are available in many different variations of colors, tone and texture. The resistance and other characteristics are also, not identical. Because granite is more resistant to stains and scratches, it is  one of the most suitable materials for kitchens and barbecue grills. Marble, more porous, less resistant, especially to stains and easily scratched by metal, is usually used in bathrooms. The white marble, however, is one of the most used countertop materials in Europe. The stains and small open porous are appreciated there.

Slate:

High strength, non-combustible, low porosity and low sensitivity to atmospheric agents, the slate is virtually smudge-proof and highly suitable for outdoor use. It may be used with or without application of mineral oil, which will give the stone a more glossy finish.

Concrete:

Easily molded to the desired format, the concrete countertop can get different textures and colors by adding pigment, aggregates and layers of epoxy. It is necessary use a sealant because, as the time pass, the top may become greenish. Concrete tends to work resulting in cracks in the material after several years and normal usage.

Tile:

Tile countertops can become very decorative by using different colors and patterns. The tiles are highly resistant to moisture and some options are also quite resistant to heat. Grout parts however, can create mildew. These countertops require a wooden base for its preparation.

Stainless Steel:"stainless steel countertop"

Extremely resistant to stains and corrosion and highly durable, stainless steel is suitable for use where a modern or a restaurant style is desired. It is easy to clean but easily show scratches and finger marks.

Solid surfaces :

Created by coating industries to compete with natural materials, Corian ®, CaesarStone ®, Silestone ®, among others, are compounds with a high percentage of quartz or other minerals bonded together, and, in some types, mixed with high quality acrylic. Easy to maintain, these materials are highly resistant to stains, scratches and chipping, and have a wide variety of colors.

Wood:

Visual cozy, wood gives a timeless look to any kitchen. It is a counter that requires a daily cleaning with a solution of water and white vinegar, especially after used to cut meats directly on it. A periodic application of oil is recommended. The aging process associated with the scratches produced by day-by-day use, give beauty to the piece.

Laminates:"Laminate Countertop"

Resistant and easy to maintain laminate countertops are undoubtedly the most economical for any indoor area. The material is made from a thin sheet of plastic glued to a cardboard, plywood or MDF for added stability. They are available in various patterns and colors. New patterns and edges details are recreating this kind of tops and making it more attractive to the consumers.

Smart Appliances

It has already been proven that the powerful electromagnetic fields formed aroundolder electrical appliances affect the health of those who are frequently exposed to them. This fact alone should be enough reason for anyone to upgrade from old appliances to new. According to EPA – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an appliance is considered obsolete when it consumes twice the energy of a similar new appliance. The more energy an appliance “draws” from the local distributing network, the greater the risk for a network overload, especially during peak hours, which can then result in an interruption with the provider due to an excess in demand.

The Energy Efficiency Council (CEE) which began in 1997 with the support from EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy launched the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA) and the initiative called Super Efficient Home Appliances (SEHA). These appliances can be recognized with the label of

"Energy Star Logo"

Look for the Energy Star Logo when buy your new appliance

“Energy Star”, which lists the level of energy used by each appliance. The CEE establishes the criteria for an appliance to be considered efficient. Based upon their criteria the council singularly determines what is considered old or obsolete among appliances. Gas, local electric, and appliance companies offer help to those interested in upgrading their appliances. Take advantage of those free opportunities to educate yourself prior to modernizing your home by choosing energy efficient appliances.

·REFRIGERATORS- Since refrigerators remain on 24- 7, they become the most important electrical appliance in a house in terms of the energy consumption.  Comparable to 2001 NAECA standards, today refrigerators are from 5% up to 63% more economical. Models considered Energy Star compliant, provide 20% or more in energy savings than their manufactured year

"Refrigerator"

New appliances save you money and helps your health and the planet

NAECA standard. When remodeling your kitchen, replacing old appliances is a must. Choose your refrigeration appliance according to your actual needs. Numerous models in different sizes and capacities are on the market to meet different demands and avoid the need of extra appliances inside your home. If you are not ready to get a new refrigerator yet, reduce the electric energy you are using now, regulating the thermostat to about 40° Fahrenheit and cleaning the dust off the condenser at least twice a year.

·RANGES – Cooking style, fuel, appliance configuration (e.g. sealed or open burners), are factors to consider when determining the energy consumed by the range. Gas ranges are more economical than electric ones; and induction systems spend less than regular electrical ranges, as per a study done by the US Department of Energy. While the Federal Trade Commission does not require Energy Star labels on stove ranges and ovens, taking these factors into consideration will save you energy and money in your kitchen remodeling.

·DISHWASHERS – Modern dishwashers are both economical in water and energy consumption. Compact models are a good option for small families, avoiding excessive waste of natural resources. The machines will save much more water than if you washed your dishes by hand. To get the most efficiency from your dishwasher and save money, always run it “fully loaded” and on the appropriate cycle setting. Saving Money later is worth the initial investment when you have your kitchen remodeled.

·WASHERS and DRYERSFront load washers are more efficient; reduce wear and tear on your clothes; consume up to 72% less electric energy and from 40% up to 76% less water than top loading models. Dryers have not changed much over the last decade, but choosing a machine with moisture sensor will reduce the energy use. Increase the productivity of your appliance by setting specific laundry days and washing all different types of clothing in sequence. This will prevent the machine from cooling completely in between uses. Choosing warm water instead of hot and cold water instead of warm will reduce the energy used to do your laundry. Another tip, use the correct size load; small loads or over-sized ones, reduce your machine productivity and increase energy use.

These are the most important and high-energy consuming appliances; by replacing them with energy efficient appliances, you save energy, money and the planet.
